The Digital Product Passport of the MCM and Harper Collective repurposed Sea-Plastic Luggage Line

Overview

In an ambitious move towards sustainable luxury travel, MCM has collaborated with Harper Collective to introduce an innovative set of repurposed sea-plastic luggage. The partnership, launched on July 11th, 2024, embodies a shared vision of transforming reclaimed materials into high-end products, aligning with both brands' commitment to environmental responsibility.

This innovative project features cutting-edge technologies provided by Temera and Aura Blockchain Consortium, including the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and Blockchain-linked NFC chips ensuring transparency, authenticity, and traceability of each product.

Project Goals

  • Innovative Transparency: Implement advanced technologies to provide full product lifecycle transparency.
  • Authenticity Assurance: Utilize serialization and NFC chips to guarantee the authenticity of each piece.
  • Sustainability: Create a luxury product line from recycled ocean plastic, setting a new standard for eco-friendly travel.

Implementation

Temera, world’s leading product traceability company for fashion and luxury market, played a crucial role in this collaboration by integrating advanced technology to ensure the traceability and authenticity of each luggage piece.

  • NFC Chips: Each luggage piece includes a blockchain-linked NFC chip. By simply scanning the embedded chip, customers can verify the authenticity and sustainability credentials of their product. This seamless interaction enhances user experience and builds confidence in the brand's commitment to transparency.

  • Serialization: Temera's technology uniquely serializes each luggage piece, preventing counterfeiting and ensuring each product's history is traceable and verifiable. This serialization process adds a layer of security and authenticity, crucial in the luxury market.

Digital Product Passport

Each luggage piece comes with a Digital Product Passport, implemented by the Aura Blockchain Consortium, a non-profit association of luxury brands investing in technologies to enhance the customer experience and build a virtuous future for luxury.
The DPP provides comprehensive information about the product's lifecycle. Customers can easily access details about the origins, materials, and sustainability of their purchases, fostering trust and informed decision-making.

Key Features

  • Materials: The luggage is made from a blend of 70% recycled ocean plastic and post-consumer plastic, crafted in an Italian atelier near Milan.
  • Design: Incorporates MCM’s iconic cognac Visetos, upcycled MCM webbing straps from different decades, and recycled quilted nylon interiors, combining style with sustainability.
  • Production: Emphasizes local craftsmanship, reducing the carbon footprint and supporting local economies.

Impact and Benefits

  • Enhanced Transparency: The DPP and NFC chips provide customers with complete visibility into the product's lifecycle, from creation to purchase.
  • Brand Trust: Serialization and blockchain integration ensure each piece is genuine, strengthening brand reputation and consumer trust.
  • Customer Engagement: The interactive nature of the NFC chips and DPP fosters deeper customer engagement and loyalty.
  • Environmental Responsibility: By repurposing ocean plastic waste, the project significantly contributes to environmental sustainability.

The collection, promoted through a CGI campaign conceived by Jaden Smith and featuring artwork by Inagaki, is available at MCM flagship stores, the Harper Collective website, and Selfridges London. It includes three silhouettes: Cabin, Expandable Cabin, and Large Check-in, each emphasizing exclusivity through limited production.

The MCM x Harper Collective collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable luxury travel. With Temera's cutting-edge technology ensuring authenticity and transparency, this project sets a new standard for the industry, demonstrating how luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously.
